Benefit of Dental Implants

Diagram of a tooth replaced with a dental implantDental implants are widely considered the best available option for artificial teeth. They are used to restore a patient's oral cavity to a high level of health. There are countless benefits to having dental implants placed. Most people have likely heard about dental implants but are completely unaware of the benefits or even how implants are placed in the oral cavity.

Those patients suffering through the latter stages of periodontal disease can greatly benefit from having dental implants. In the late stages of periodontal disease, patients generally suffer from widespread decay and tooth loss in their oral cavity. Dental implants can be the first step in a restorative dentistry procedure which provides a secure base upon which crowns, bridges, and dentures can be placed. After the procedure is complete, the patient's smile is restored as is the lost functionality which occurs with tooth loss. The artificial teeth are able to be flossed and brushed as if they were natural teeth.

Once placed, the artificial teeth can be polished and cleaned just like natural teeth during bi-annual cleanings and examinations. Dental implants are a permanent solution that require no dietary changes as is the case with dentures and bridges. Those patients interested in hearing more about dental implants are invited to come see us at our Coastal Maine Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery office. Come on in today.

What Are the Components of Dental Implants?

Those patients who are suffering from widespread tooth loss can also be suffering from an incredible amount of anxiety and stress. Think about it. Our teeth are a big part of our appearance and the first impressions we make. Dental implants can be the perfect solution to all of those problems. Dental implants can be shaded and shaped to match the existing teeth in the oral cavity, so they blend in completely.

When asked, most patients think that dental implants are a single piece placed in the oral cavity, but they would be wrong. Dental implants are actually comprised of three separate sections. The first section is the component embedded into the patient's jawbone that provides an anchor for the other two pieces. The second component is known as the abutment and is threaded onto the implant. The final section is then secured to the abutment and is known as the crown. This is the only section that is viewable above the gumline.

Placement Procedure for Dental Implants

The implant placement procedure does take a number of months to complete. There are multiple appointments required to ensure the placement is successful. During the first appointment, we will assess the oral cavity and prepare the patient's mouth for their implants. In some cases, additional procedures are warranted such as tooth extractions, gum grafts, or bone grafts to ensure the oral cavity is healthy enough to support the implants.

Patients who have experienced a great deal of tooth loss face a wide variety of artificial tooth solutions.
